Jack Rahilly Tournament
On Saturday last Scartaglin GAA Club hosted the inaurgual Jack Rahilly tournament in memory of a great servant of Scartaglin GAA Club.
Our u12 mixed team participated and were drawn in a group that contained Knock/Brosna and Desmonds. We began with a comprehensive victory over Knock/Brosna.Our game versus Desmonds was a much closer affair with the Castleisland side having the better of the first half but we improved in the second half and eventually ran out one point winners.
This saw us pitted against Currow in the semi final where we continued our good form to progress to the final against old rivals Desmonds.
It was the town side who made the better start and led 1-3 to 0-1 midway through the first half however Ballymac fought back to reduce the margin to just a point at half time 1-3 to 1-2.The second half was nip and tuck between two evenly matched teams and they could not be seperated at the end of normal time with the final score 1-5 apiece.
Extra time was played and with the game deep into injury time and Ballymac leading on a 2-6 to 1-6 scoreline Desmonds launched a final attack from which they scored an equalising goal much to the delight of their supporters.
As per competition rules a “golden score” would be needed to seperate the teams.High drama ensued as Desmonds won the throw in an attacked however the Ballymac defence stood firm and forced a turn over and worked the ball in to a scoring position which was availed of to the delight of the Ballymac followers.
On the day Ballymac had 18 heros and heroines who gave 100% throughout the competition and their never say die attitude particularly in the final ensured they took home the cup.Mention must be made of a gallant Desmonds side who were dissappointed at the finish but they can hold their heads high as the performed excellently throughout the day.
Mrs Mary Rahilly presented the Jack Rahilly cup to her grandaughter Roisin Rahilly the victorious Ballymac captain.
Huge credit must go to the Scartaglin Club and the Rahilly family for the fantastic organisation and hospitality laid on on the day.

The A team had a home game last Monday evening against Ardfert in the Division 1 of the Central Region. Played in ideal conditions with a slight breeze aiding Ardfert in the first half, scores were hard to come by in the opening quarter with both defences on top. Ardfert got the opening score from a free, which was quickly followed by a goal and a point. Our boy’s responded with a goal and a point of our own. Ardfert came down the field and scored a goal of their own. Ardfert were now on top and putting our boy’s under pressure. Ardfert scored a further goal and six points before the half time whistle with our boy’s responding with a goal and three points to leave the half time score 3-08 to 2-04 in Ardfert’s favour. Words of encouragement and a few positional switches were made for the second half. Ardfert opened the scoring from a free but after that Ballymac took over with some wonderful movements and score taking. Our boy’s put pressure on their kick outs, turning the ball over regularly, and stopping Ardferts forwards from getting on the ball. When Ardfert were getting a shot, it was under big pressure from our defence. Scores were coming regularly now from our boy’s and with all 18 on the panel getting game time the full time whistle was blown with Ballymac victorious on the scoreline of Ballymac 4-13 Ardfert 3-12. Next up for the U14 A boys is a home fixture against Austin Stacks on Monday the 17th of July at 7.00pm. The B team had an away game last Monday evening against Austin Stacks B in the Division 3 Central Region. They boys came up against a strong Stacks side on the evening and were defeated on a score line of 5-29 to 2-01. The B team have now finished all their games in the Central Region and unfortunately have failed to qualify for the latter stages of the competition.
