The senior team lost by a point to Brosna in round one of the junior championship in Ballymac on Sunday last. This was always likely to be a close affair and it proved to be. The home team started well and had a point in the first minute through wing back Philip Galvin. Padraig McCarthy had a second point after five minutes. Brosna responded and had the next three points from Timmy Finnegan, Tom McGoldrick and Dave Curtin. Genie Griffin tied up the game with a point after fifteen minutes. It was nip and tuck at this stage and a fine point from Ballymac fullback Mossie Shanahan made it 0-05 a piece at the break. Brosna began the second half better and had a points from McGoldrick and Eamonn Kiely. The home team responded with points from Luke Sweeney and an Aiden Breen free. Brosna went two in front again with scores from McGoldrick and Timmy Finnegan. Ballymac then had a point from Dermot Leen to reduce the margin to one but try as they might that crucial score could not be found. Aiden Breen was then red carded, one of many questionable decisions made by referee Peter Lyons during the game. Extra time appeared to be on the cards when Ballymac were awarded a free deep in injury time but Colin McSwiney was unable to guide the ball between the posts. Final score Ballymac 0-08 Brosna 0-09.
