MINORS:
Ballymac/Churchill 2-08
Beaufort 1-09
The Keane’s County Minor Division 3 B Final was played at a sun drenched Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown on Saturday. Surprisingly it looked as if it was the amalgamation of Churchill and Ballymacelligott that were hungrier for the fray and they hassled and worked very hard for each other throughout.
Indeed the influence of Michael Broderick and his management team ensured that their side were well motivated for the fray.
Killian Fitzgerald proved their match winner at full-forward, kicking 0-7 from frees, and he deservedly got the man of the match award. The first quarter was very scrappy neither side managing a point from play, as Beaufort wasted some good possession while Killian Fitzgerald converted two frees as Beaufort’s indiscipline at the back was being punished as they conceded needless frees.
Padraig Doona eventually opened Beaufort’s account, with a fine point from play in the 16th minute, after a long free for a foul on Ronan Murphy.
Both sides huffed and puffed with Fitzgerald adding two more frees, before Doona responded with a free for Beaufort while Jonathon Keane got Churchill/Ballymac’s solitary first half point from play as they retired 0-5 to 0-2 in front.
Beaufort resumed as if they meant business with the breeze to their backs and two early points from the excellent Doona and Cormac O’Connor closed the gap to a point but following another Fitzgerald free, Churchill/Ballymac struck for the match deciding score.
Eoin Herlihy and Killian Fitzgerald were involved in a defence splitting move that saw wing back J J Prior forced the ball to the Beaufort net to give them a 1-6 to 0-5 lead after forty minutes.
However in much better second half Beaufort thanks to the promptings of Fergal Hallissey and Kerry minor Ronan Murphy closed the gap to a point with three unanswered points from Hallissey ( 0-2 frees) and another superb point from Padraig Doona.
However Churchill/Ballymac settled the contest with a goal and a point in the space of two minutes, with Fitzgerald scoring yet another free while substitute Ian Parker grabbed a crucial goal.
This gave the amalgamation a five point lead, and despite a Doona point and goal from Ronan Murphy after a one two with Fergal Hallissey, Fitzgerald’s seventh point from a placed ball, ensured that the title was heading to Churchill and Ballymac.
