Castleisland District League Shield Final : Ballymac 2-09 Currow 5-09.
Played at Knocknagoshel last Sunday morning this Shield final lived up to all expectations with a fine contest being battled out by two committed sides. Ballymac elected to play against the strengthening breeze in the first half and by the fifth minute Currow had kicked four wides with inaccurate shooting. Ballymac goaled in the 7th minute when centre-forward Jerdie O Shea scored a fine effort from 13 metres which put the Blue ‘n Gold ahead. Currow replied almost immediately when corner forward John McMahon netted. We were put under immense pressure from that moment onwards in the first half with Robert Dowd, Gary Horan and Max O Brien trying to repel the Currow onslaught. Darragh Regan scored from a free after 12 minutes to keep Ballymac within toughing distance but Currow stole in for a second goal just before half time with keeper Brian Lonergan unable to keep out the effort. Trailing by 6 points at half-time, Ballymac knew they were still in the game and scored from two frees within the first 2 minutes of the resumption. Corner forward Daire Keane was causing all sort of problems for the Currow rearguard as was Liam O Malley in the half-forward line. Micheál Reidy drove on the lads from mid-field but Currow seemed to be able to score from every attack. Eoin O Malley covered every inch of grass as Ballymac chased the game and 10 minutes into the second half Darragh Regan scored a fine goal to reduce the margin to 4 points. However, Currow netted three more times in the closing minutes to seal a deserving win over a gallant Ballymac side who fought to the very end. Best for Ballymac were David Long, Darragh Regan Daire Keane and Jerdie O Shea. Foireann : Brian Lonergan, Kevin O Connor, Robert Dowd, David Long, Joshua O Keeffe, Max O Brien, Gary Horan, Micheál Reidy, Eoin O Malley, Liam O Malley, Jerdie O Shea, Darragh Regan, Daire Keane, Kealan Brosnan, Paddy O Donnell, Eddie Rogers, Ross Mansfield, Kieran Coggins, Liam O Brien, Cillian Gallagher
