Rose Cup U-13 Tournament 2013
Our U-13 panel produced some scintillating displays at the Annual Rose Cup Tournament on Saturday last. Unlike the previous three years, where our games were played at Killeen, all our group games were played at Healy Park, Ballyrickard this year and our boys put in creditable displays throughout the competition. Having being drawn in Group C along with St. Senans, Rahillys and Listowel Emmets, it seemed that Ballymac had ended up in the Group of Death but credit to all the players, they were never fazed by the prospect of facing stern opposition and the panel proceeded to play some delightful football throughout.. Our opening game was against St. Senans and despite a sluggish display we managed to overcome the North Kerry side thanks to a wonder goal from centre-forward Cathal Dunne. Others to impress in this opening fixture were Eoin Culloty in goals, Kieran Coggin and Cian Godley at corner forward. Despite the sub-par performance, Ballymac had notched up 2 points on the League table which was indeed a very positive start to the tournament. In game 2, we faced a crunch match against town rivals Kerins O Rahillys with the winner advancing to either the Cup or Shield semi-final. A superb second half display against Rahillys and playing into a stiffening wind with our lads coming out on top with goals coming from mid-fielder David Nolan Tighe, corner forward Eoghan Leahy and a neat finish to the net by David Rogers. An impressive defensive system by all frustrated our opponents for large periods of the game with Tadhg Brick in imperious form, able assisted by Dylan Dunne Moriarty, Liam O Brien, Brian Lonergan, Ciarán Brosnan and Ciarán Nolan Tighe. Having kept two clean sheets in our opening two games, confidence was high heading into our final round-robin game against Listowel Emmets. The scenario was quite simple. The winners would advance to the Rose Cup semi-final. Listowel were a strong and physical side but our lads were not overawed by the opposition and again proceeded to play some fast free flowing football. Joshua O Keeffe, deployed at full forward for the opening half scored our first goal as he smashed a shot into the roof of the net and our diminutive corner forward Jonathan Lowe score a marvellous point from an acute angle. Our second half display was of epic proportions with resolute defending once again by all. Barry Lyons netted again with both Jack O Connor and Darragh Broderick contributing to a fine attacking display. A marvellous victory over Emmets with the reward of playing the Black and amber of Stacks in the Rose Cup semi-final. In truth our lads found the going tough against the Tralee side as we were forced to play only 10 minutes after our previous game and even the introduction of Daire Keane in the forward line could not stem the tide against Ballymac. Cillian Gallagher was at his outstanding best in this game and he repelled wave after wave of Stacks attacks. However Stacks went on to win the game comfortable and then proceeded to win out the Tournament.
Ballymac won many supporters on the day as the belied and surpassed all expectations. Great credit once again to all the supporters who witnessed some delightful football from all the lads throughout the day. Well done to all involved. Many thanks to Kerins O Rahillys Club for their hospitality on the day.
