U14 CAILINI
Our U14 Ladies team travelled to Fossa GAA Club in Killarney on Sunday evening for round two of the County League Division 2. After what was a glorious day, the weather for the second week running, took a turn for the worst and the game was played in appalling conditions. Credit to Fossa for facilities that coped well with the deluge although ball handling was very difficult. The first half was dominated by Ballymac up front, quick ball in saw Cora Savage and Emily O’ Donohue notch up some fine scores between them while Kate O’Connor popped up twice in two minutes to poach two goals, the first a loose ball fisted to the net after Fossa’s keeper saved a point blank shot from Emily O’Donoghue & the second a tap in after some link up play with Cora Savage on the edge of the box.
Ballymac however were not having it all their own way and with the hosts boasting two Kerry U14’s in Maud Kelly & Sara Sheehan Fossa laid siege in the Ballymac half for periods but some great defending and some excellent goalkeeping saw Ballymac go into the interval with a comfortable 5 point lead. Ballymac 2-04 Fossa 0-5. In a game of two halves Fossa who emerged the hungrier continued where they left off in the first half and again laid siege on the Ballymac goal. It was Fossa’s two aforementioned Kerry Girls who spearheaded the Fossa come back and once they got their nose in front, they never looked back. Ballymac to their credit fought right to the end and kicked four unanswered points in the closing stages. Through on goal on a couple of occasions the Fossa rearguard held fast to deny Ballymac the goals they needed to launch a comeback. Time eventually ran out and Fossa were deserved winners on the night. Final Score 4-10 to 2-08.
Scorers on the night for Ballymac were Kate O’Connor 2-0, Roisin Long 0-3, Cora Savage 0-2, Emily O’Donoghue 0-2 & Caroline Hurley 0-1. Best on the night were Roisin Long giving a towering display at fullback and when she was moved out the field in the latter stages she kicked three fine points, playing as a wing forward and later as a wing back. Cait Rice also rose to the occasion giving a determined performance.
Special thanks to our band of supporters who braved the harsh conditions two weeks running. Our next game is scheduled for Sunday 17th April at home to Scartaglen
