Pride of place this week goes to our U12 girls team following their victory over Desmonds in Castleisland on Sunday last in Division 3 of the Co. League. The team had won the North Kerry League earlier in the year but this was was the title the whole club has been wishing for. This was the third year in a row the team had reached the County Final but their first taste of victory.
The home side struck early with a point but Ballymac took the lead when a 45 was deflected to her own net by a Desmonds girl in the 5th minute. Desmonds were making the most of their chances and by the 20th minute led on a score line of 1 – 6 to 1 – 1 however Ballymac fought back bravely and by half time had reduced the deficit to 2 points. Half time score Desmonds 1 – 7 Ballymac 1 – 5. Ballymac scorers in this half were Caroline Hurley (0 – 3) and Cora Savage (1 – 2)
Our girls got a tonic start to a second half when Emily O Donoghue struck for a goal, and another point by Cora Savage saw the sides level mid way through the second half. A Catriona Somers goal with 10 minutes remaining gave Ballymac a lead they never relinquished and a point by inspirational captain Aisling O Connell saw us run out winners on a score of 3 – 7 to 1 – 11. Captain Ashling O Connell proudly accepted the trophy from County Board Secretary Mary Courtney on behalf of the team. Desmonds were disappointed with their defeat but they can be proud of the performance on the day.
Great credit is due to the management team of Kieran Savage, Anthony Curran and Mary Slattery for the great work they have put in with this panel of players. This is only the clubs 4th year formed and the future is certainly looking very bright! Thanks also to Lee Strand for their sponsorship of a set of jerseys for the girls.
